escalante, jaime.7.07.cphoto Participants in the annual OASSA/OESPA Principals Conference will learn what it truly means to "stand and deliver," thanks to keynote speaker Jaime Escalante.  The conference, "Moving Oregon Schools from Good to Great," is set for October 17-19 at Sunriver.

Escalante is a high school teacher whose students, underprivileged and Hispanic, have set standards in mathematics all but unequaled in American education.  His fascinating, unforgettable and inspirational story gives a vivid picture of genius in the teaching profession.  The subject of the book Escalante: The Best Teacher in America, in person is as vital, genuine and challenging as he is to his student’s everyday.  An immigrant from Bolivia, Mr. Escalante has become a folk hero for his success—so much so, in fact, that a movie has been made about him, Stand and Deliver, one of 1988’s most acclaimed films.  In 1999 he was officially inducted into the Teachers Hall of Fame.

The three-day conference features a day for principal-and-teacher-teams, followed by two days of keynotes and breakout sessions. Register here.

K-12 Principals and teams are encouraged to attend together October 17 for team workshops on important topics of their choice, including:

  •  Instructional Coaching
  •  Mathematics Best Practices for new diploma requirements
  •  Data team training
  •  Other workshops are under development

Participants for October 18 and 19 will hear from Escalante and also choose from more than 20 breakout sessions presented by principals and teams from throughout the state.  Topics will include internet current trends, reading, writing, math best practices, high school reform, update on state educational requirements, school improvement systems, and many others.

A special feature of the conference each year is the OASSA/OESPA recognition luncheon.

Exhibitors will host a Thursday evening reception and be available to help with resources.
