Pam Zaklan believes that, with hard work, all things are possible.  And for her, the recently named 2009 National Distinguished Principal for Oregon, it seems to hold true.  Although she has served as principal of Wilson Elementary School in Medford for the past 10 years, she actually began her career as a classified employee, working in various positions.  She then pursued her teaching degree, and taught both elementary and middle school in the Medford district.  Finally, after experiencing many aspects of education, she took the next step, obtaining her administrative license.

Wilson Elementary is a Title 1 school, with many economic challenges, but she’s not daunted by them.  She knew that a key was to implement Positive Behavior Support, and to reach out to parents, inviting them to become part of their child’s education.  Her colleagues note that Pam is highly visible and has helped to shape the school into an inviting place for students and families.

Fellow principal, Ginny Hicks, herself an NDP winner, notes that Pam has taught classes for the New Teacher Induction Institute for many years, and that she recently trained all district administrators to be successful mentors, training them in Second Steps, a pro-social skills program.  Hicks states, “On a personal level Pam is positive, outgoing, and enthusiastic about education and always willing to share her knowledge and expertise with others.  Our district is richer for having her serve the community as an elementary principal.”

Zaklan will be honored at the OESPA/OASSA Principals Conference in October.  As a state NDP winner, she will attend a formal recognition ceremony in Washington D.C., also in October.  The award is sponsored by the National Association of Elementary School Principals, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education and Valic.
