escalante, jaime.7.07.cphotofitzpatrick_web Participants will need to reserve lodging at Sunriver by October 1 in order to guarantee that they receive the conference rate for the OASSA/OESPA Principals Conference, set for October 17-19.

The three-day conference features a day for principal-and-teacher-teams, followed by two days that feature keynote speakers Jaime Escalante and Dr. Kathleen Fitzpatick, as well as more than 20 breakout sessions. Register here .

Escalante is a high school teacher whose students, underprivileged and Hispanic, have set standards in mathematics all but unequaled in American education.  His fascinating, unforgettable and inspirational story gives a vivid picture of genius in the teaching profession.  The subject of the book Escalante: The Best Teacher in America, in person is as vital, genuine and challenging as he is to his student’s everyday.  An immigrant from Bolivia, Mr. Escalante has become a folk hero for his success—so much so, in fact, that a movie has been made about him, Stand and Deliver, one of 1988’s most acclaimed films.  In 1999 he was officially inducted into the Teachers Hall of Fame.

Fitzpatrick is the founding director of the Leadership for Learning Alliance. Over the past ten years she has served as the Executive Director of the National Study of School Evaluation. Her career experience includes serving as a classroom teacher, leadership roles at the school and district level, university professor, and researcher & principal investigator with the U. S. Department of Education’s Center for Educational Policy and Management and the Laboratory for Student Success. Fitzpatrick has authored numerous articles and publications on educational leadership and research-based frameworks for systemic change and continuous improvement. Kathleen and her associates bring a deep and informed understanding of the critical issues facing school leaders today, and a steadfast commitment to serving the needs of school leaders engaged in the continuous improvement of their schools on behalf of student learning.

K-12 Principals and teams are encouraged to attend together October 17 for team workshops on important topics of their choice, including:

  •  Instructional Coaching
  •  Mathematics Best Practices for new diploma requirements
  •  Data team training
  •  Other workshops are under development

Participants for October 18 and 19 will hear from Escalante and Fitzpatrick and also choose from more than 20 breakout sessions presented by principals and teams from throughout the state.  Topics will include internet current trends, reading, writing, math best practices, high school reform, update on state educational requirements, school improvement systems, and many others.

OASSA and OESPA annual business meetings/luncheons are scheduled on Thursday.  Exhibitors will host a Thursday evening reception and be available to help with resources.
