State Board wants your advice on graduation requirements Print E-mail

grad-requirement-top-banner COSA is working with State Superintendent Susan Castillo and the State Board of Education to encourage every middle and high school faculty, and every school board and parent group, to weigh in on proposed high school graduation requirements.

The State Board of Education has been deeply involved in the work of reviewing Oregon’s high school graduation requirements, and seeking input from a variety of sources, for more than a year.

Now, the Board is asking for the most important feedback of all – direct responses from those closest to local schools and students, including teachers, administrators, school board members and parents.

The State Board, with COSA's assistance, is inviting individuals and groups to tell them what you think.  Between now and January, they are asking schools and districts to hold 45-to-60-minute staff, parent and board meetings to gather local input about the State Board’s proposals.  COSA is providing regional facilitator-training sessions at which participants will learn how to conduct these meetings.  As well, the Oregon Department of Education has produced a “meeting-in-a-box.”  Each kit contains a facilitator’s guide, a 12-minute video, brochures and response forms.

The best option for participation is to attend a COSA/ODE regional facilitator-training session.  At the sessions, participants (including high school and middle school administrators and counselors, superintendents and other administrators) will be trained to lead staff, board and parent groups through the meetings and gather local feedback for the State Board.  The will also receive the meeting-in-a-box kit.  Please contact Craig Hawkins at COSA to sign up, or if you need more information.  The meetings are set for:
  • Nov. 8, 1-2:30 p.m., Southern Oregon ESD
  • Nov. 13, 9-10:30 a.m., Clackamas ESD
  • Nov. 13, 1:30-3 p.m., Northwest Regional ESD
  • Nov. 14, 1-2:30 p.m., Linn Benton Lincoln ESD
  • Nov. 15, 9-10:30 a.m., Willamette ESD
  • Nov. 20, 9-10:30 a.m., Lane ESD
  • Nov. 21, 9-10:30 a.m., Multnomah ESD

If you are unable to attend a regional session, you may:

The direct feedback from your teachers, administrators, board members and parents will be shared with the State Board at its meetings beginning in December.  This public input process will conclude in January.
